| Tariff in cents: Sauspiel ________ Solo and Wenz ________ Schneider, Schwarz, per runner ________ | ||||||
What is the game worth?
Cents per loser
50
Sauspiel 10 + Schneider 10 + 3 runners 30 = 50
Each loser pays one winner 50 cents.
Tariff: Sauspiel 10, Solo and Wenz 50, Schneider, Schwarz and each runner 10 cents.
How to keep score
- Write the four names at the top and your tariff at the bottom.
- One row per game: what was played, such as “Sauspiel” or “Hearts solo”, and the amount.
- Then the new score for all four. In a Sauspiel, the two winners get the amount added and the two losers get it subtracted.
- In a Solo, Wenz or Tout, the declarer gets three times the amount and each of the other three loses it once. If the declarer loses, it’s the other way round.
- All four scores always add up to 0. That way you spot a mistake straight away.
What a game costs
The usual tariff under the Schafkopf rules of the Schafkopfschule in Munich. Every table sets its own tariff; 20 cents for a Sauspiel is common too.
| For | Cents |
|---|---|
| Sauspiel: you play with the partner who holds the called ace | 10 |
| Solo or Wenz: you play alone against three | 50 |
| Schneider: declarers with 30 card points or fewer, defenders with 29 or fewer | +10 |
| Schwarz: one side takes no trick (on top of Schneider) | +10 |
| Runners: in Sauspiel and Solo from 3, in Wenz from 2, then each one | +10 each |
| Tout: all tricks announced; runners count, Schneider and Schwarz don’t | × 2 |
| Sie: four Obers and four Unters, four times a Solo with 8 runners | 520 |
| Stoß: a defender doubles | × 2 |
| Retour: the declaring side answers the Stoß | × 4 |
Who pays whom?
In a Sauspiel, each loser pays one winner the amount. On the sheet: winners plus, losers minus.
In a Solo, Wenz, Tout or Sie, each of the three defenders pays the declarer the amount. If the declarer loses, they pay it to each of the three.
House rules
| For | Cents |
|---|---|
| Knocking (Klopfen or Legen): each time | × 2 |
| Bock round: as many games as there are players | × 2 |
| Ramsch when everyone passes: the player with the most card points pays each other player the price of a Sauspiel | 10 |
| Ramsch: per player without a trick (Jungfrau) | × 2 |
Based on the Schafkopf rules of the Schafkopfschule in Munich (2024). Knocking, bock rounds, Ramsch, Bettel and Geier are house rules. If your table plays differently, your table’s rules apply.
Questions and answers
How much is a Sauspiel?
Usually 10 cents: each loser pays one winner 10 cents. Add 10 cents for Schneider, 10 for Schwarz and 10 per runner once there are at least three.
When do runners count?
In Sauspiel and Solo from three, in Wenz from two. Then each one counts: three runners are 30 cents, four are 40. They count even when the other side holds them.
How much is a Solo?
50 cents from each of the three defenders, €1.50 in total. With Schneider it’s 60 cents per defender, plus any runners.
When is a side Schneider?
The declaring side with 30 card points or fewer, the defenders with 29 or fewer. So the declarers only win Schneider with 91 card points.
What is a Tout?
The declarer announces they will take every trick. The game counts double, runners included. Schneider and Schwarz don’t count extra. If the defenders take a single trick, the declarer loses.
What do Stoß and Retour mean?
With a Stoß, a defender doubles the amount before the second card is played. If the declaring side answers with Retour, the game counts four times.
Is the tariff the same everywhere?
No. Every table sets its own, often 10 or 20 cents for a Sauspiel and 50 for a Solo. Write it at the bottom of the sheet.
